Groundhog Day sequel is a VR game, coming in 2019 for Oculus Rift, Vive, and PlayStation VR

Sony Pictures has announced a sequel to the classic 1993 movie Groundhog Day, and surprisingly, it will be a virtual reality game. Coming with the title Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, the game puts players in the shoes of Phil Connors Jr., who - just like his father in the original movie - is stuck in a time-loop in the small town of Punxsutawney.

The VR game is set to feature a branching storyline spanning eight hours as players solve puzzles to figure out how to escape the forever-repeating Groundhog Day. Much like the original, this will involve Phil Connors Jr. learning the "the true value of friends and family". If nothing else, the game is sure to have plenty of replayability.

The Spanish studio Tequila Works is developing the game, the architects behind hits such as RiME, Deadlight, and The Sexy Brutale (co-developed). This is not the studio"s first VR venture, however. It also developed the well-received murder mystery adventure The Invisible Hours in 2017.

A definite release date for Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son has not been announced yet, but the game is slated to come out on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR sometime in 2019.
