Three and half years after it was originally launched, GTA V has now shipped over 75 million copies. The game’s publisher, Take-Two Interactive announced the milestone last night, as it also highlighted other, newer titles doing well on the market.
GTA V was originally launched in September of 2013, being at the time one of the most expensive video games ever made, with a reported price tag close to $270 million. However, by the end of its first 24 hours on the market, the game’s developer Rockstar Games, was already swimming in cash, with GTA reportedly earning $800 million on that day alone.
Fast forward three and half years and a number of expansions and add-ons later, and GTA V is still one of the best-selling games of all time. Note however, that the 75 million mark is games shipped to retailers, not necessarily games sold to consumers. Despite that, GTA is closing in Minecraft, arguably the best-selling modern video game, which has reportedly sold close to 110 million copies.
Despite the title’s success its developers are far from done. Recently, the game received additional free content in the form of motorcycle clubs, a Tron-like mode called Deadline, and further updates. The title is also being used in new and interesting ways: not only is there a vibrant modding community on PCs, but GTA V has also been used to train artificial intelligence and self-driving cars thanks to its realistic world. It’s clear Los Santos still has a lot to offer to its visitors.
Now with all this success, only one question remains: will Rockstar ever fix the GTA Online servers?
