In June, Microsoft announced plans to release Halo: Spartan Assault, an all new top-down shooter set in Microsoft"s hugely popular Halo universe but made specifically for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices. Today, Verizon Wireless announced that when the game is released later in July, it will be made available first for Verizon"s Windows Phone 8 smartphones.
Verizon"s announcement didn"t offer any information on exactly when the game will be released, nor when the carrier"s exclusivity deal will end. It"s also not known if Verizon"s deal extends to the Windows 8 version of the game. We have emailed Microsoft and Verizon for clarification. Verizon did say that Halo: Spartan Assault would be playable on all four of its Windows Phone 8 products (Nokia Lumia 928 and 822, HTC Windows Phone 8X and Samsung ATIV Odyssey) and that it will be priced at $6.99.
Just a reminder: The storyline of Halo: Spartan Assault takes place in between Halo 3 and 4, with players controlling either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis as they deal with the always pesky Covenant aliens. We got to play a brief demo of the Windows 8 version at E3 2013.
