At Snapdragon Tech Summit this week, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 7c and Snapdragon 8c, two new chipsets for entry-level and mainstream PCs, respectively. Of course, the two new chipsets sit below the premium Snapdragon 8cx in the lineup.
I got to try them out on Qualcomm"s reference devices in the demo room, also playing with some Surface Pro X units that were on display. The Snapdragon 8c is the successor to the Snapdragon 850, which was the predecessor to the 8cx and was meant to carry on in the mainstream market. The 8c should be 30% faster, and shares a lot of qualities with the 8cx.
I"m told that even the Snapdragon 7c is faster than the Snapdragon 850, which was based on the two-year-old Snapdragon 845. Devices with the new chipset should start at around $300, providing an incredible value proposition with thinner, lighter, and always-connected devices. Indeed, at that price point, 4G LTE connectivity currently doesn"t even exist.
The Snapdragon 8c should fit into the $500 to $700 range, depending on the specs of the devices, and which configuration you choose. And then the 8cx will be $700 and up.
