Hawken has been on our radar for some time, and we got a chance to play the free-to-play mech action game at E3 in June. Now the publisher behind the game, Meteor Entertainment, has secured some new funding ahead of Hawken"s official launch.
Geekwire.com reports that $18 million in new venture capital funding has been raised by Meteor. Two of the companies that have helped to fund the game, Benchmark Capital and FirstMark Capital, previously invested in another free-to-play game, League of Legends.
In fact, Meteor CEO Mark Long claims that Hawken could be bigger than League of Legends, which has a massive fan base already. It can also be highly profitable thanks to the use of cloud servers. Long states:
We can dynamically provision servers as we need them, and even as the sun goes around the Earth, we can shut down the servers we don’t need. That gives us fantastic efficiency … and really infinite scalability that really wasn’t possible even a few years ago.
The game is scheduled to officially launch on December 12. Meteor has a second, unnamed, game in the works and a third game could go into production in 2013.
