Last October, Microsoft announced HoloLens Development Edition, the first version of its holographic headset available to purchase, priced at a cool $3,000.
As it name suggests, the headset was offered to developers, who were required to apply to join a waiting list to eventually buy the device. Microsoft also worked closely with a number of companies, including the likes of Japan Airlines, and Swedish automotive giant Volvo, to explore how the headset could be put to use in various business scenarios.
Today, as it announced availability of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update for HoloLens, Microsoft"s Alex Kipman said that the company has "fulfilled the orders for our first waves of developers", adding:
I’m pleased to announce that we’re expanding the program, making HoloLens Development Edition available to all developers and business customers in the United States and Canada.
This is a significant milestone in HoloLens development, as it takes the next step towards a full commercial launch. From today, any and all businesses and devs in those markets can buy up to five HoloLens headsets from Microsoft"s website, with no application required.
Microsoft is continuing to explore potential uses for the new mixed-reality device, and in addition to broader availability, it"s introducing new tools to help businesses make the most of it.
