HP Elite x3 to get gold option and new branding, but fingerprint sensor disabled until Fall

In February, just ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) industry expo in Barcelona, HP unveiled its new Windows 10 Mobile flagship, the Elite x3. So far, the handset has only been seen with dark grey bodywork featuring metallic highlights - officially known as "Graphite/Chrome" - but a second color option has now been revealed.

Documentation for the device (PDF) on HP"s website, updated this month, shows that the Elite x3 will also be available in a "Gold/Gold" configuration. As Windows Central points out, a footnote clarifies that that color option will not be available in every market in which the handset is sold. HP hasn"t yet revealed what the gold model will look like.

Interestingly, the document also reveals that although the device will be released with a fingerprint sensor, it apparently won"t be supported at launch. The spec sheet states that it "will not be enabled until OTA update in Fall 2016" - that date suggests that the update in question is unrelated to the Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update, which will be released on August 2.

Early prototypes of the Elite x3 shown at MWC didn"t include the fingerprint scanner, but pre-production models seen more recently have included the sensor on the rear of the device.

Updated renders of the Elite x3 now show the device with the new-style HP logo that first appeared on the company"s ultra-thin Spectre notebook this year. HP said in April that it would not be rebranding the entire company with the new logo, but that it would use it exclusively on its premium laptops. The Elite x3 has only been seen with the "classic" circular HP logo until now - but evidently, HP also plans to extend the new logo"s use to its high-end phone.

Key specs of the Elite x3 include:
