HP Envy 13 unboxing and first impressions

HP"s Envy 13 is a sexy device, and if it weren"t for a lack of Thunderbolt 3 and an IR camera, it could probably be branded under HP"s premium Spectre banner. With its angled front, flat back, and aluminum body it screams premium.

The 13-inch clamshell packs an Intel Core i7-8565U, which is from the Whiskey Lake family, and it has dedicated graphics in the form of an Nvidia GeForce MX250. But even with a dedicated GPU, it still only weighs in at 2.59 pounds.

For such a thin and light device, HP has an innovative way of cooling it. The hinge props it up, allowing for better airflow on the bottom of the PC. There are other workarounds for the thinness as well, such as dropjaw USB Type-A ports.

It also comes with a webcam kill switch, a feature first seen on HP"s Spectre convertibles. Rather than building a privacy guard or building the webcam into the keyboard, the Envy 13 will disconnect the webcam internally. The system doesn"t even know it"s there.
