Chromebooks have generally been positioned as entry-level laptops by all manufacturers with the exception of the Chromebook Pixel from Google, which is a rather expensive device. Now, HP has announced the Chromebook 13 which boasts some premium features and a sleek metallic design, a first for its Chrome OS device.
The Chromebook 13 range is said to be capable of handling work and home usage scenarios, aided by the following configuration:
- Sixth-generation Intel Core M (Skylake) processors
- 13.3-inch IPS LCD screen with QHD+ (3200x1800) resolution
- RAM starting from 4 GB up to 16 GB (Region dependent)
- 32 GB of on-board storage
- Two USB Type-C connectors
- 45 watt-hour battery providing up to 11.5 hours of usage
- B&O Play audio and video enhancements
- Back-lit keyboard
HP has made the device very sleek and light. The lightest variant of the Chromebook 13 is expected to weigh around 1.29 kg but the weight can increase depending on the internal configuration. The thickness should remain consistent at around 12.9 mm.
On the software side, HP has introduced a few features to the OS such as Lucid Sleep, which keeps the user"s apps and documents updated prior to waking up and HP Print, which allows the use of local printers. In addition to these, Android apps might be headed to the Chrome OS in the near future, allowing users to get more out of their devices.
The Chromebook 13 will be made available soon in various markets for a starting price of $499. Additional subscriptions can be purchased starting from $16 per month, which covers accidental damage protection and on-site pickup and return for issues.
