During HTC"s big announcement-spree at Mobile World Congress, the Taiwanese firm released details of a new tablet that they expect to release in the second quarter of 2011. According to reports from Engadget, the latest entry into a burgeoning Android tablet market will be called the HTC Flyer.
Flicking through the specs-sheet for this thing, it"s fairly easy to see where the name comes from. Powered by a 1.5GHz processor and sporting a whopping 1GB of RAM, the 7 inch slate isn"t short on thrust. Other specs of note include a 1024x600 resolution, rear and front facing cameras of the 5 and 1.3 megapixel variety respectively and a microSD card slot.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the announcement is the addition of a pressure-sensitive stylus called HTC Scribe. HTC claims this will bring "a groundbreaking experience" though the proof will very much be in the pudding. Tablets with styli have historically been a mixed bag, though HTC are clearly confident they"ve found the answer with their new tech.
Software-wise, as with all HTC hardware (bar the Nexus One) the Flyer comes complete with a version of Sense running on top of the base operating system of Google"s Android 2.3, or Gingerbread for the codename-inclined. No Honeycomb here, folks.
Other than that, it"s the usual Android tablet affair, though HTC does say that OnLive gaming will come to the Flyer in the form of a 3rd party app in the future. Whether this will be an HTC exclusive remains to be seen.
