While VR headsets are certainly an interesting product, there is always the reality of having to plug in a few wires to the headset while also positioning multiple sensors within the room. Although there are accessories that can untether your experience, it looks like HTC has partnered with Qualcomm to produce a self-contained Vive headset - dubbed the Vive Standalone - that will be exclusive to China.
The headset will run apps from HTC’s Viveport platform and will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 processor. The Qualcomm processor offers the ability to track motion from within the device and doesn"t rely on external sensors. While this is certainly exciting news for those that want to experience quality VR without the hassle of setting up a room and purchasing a capable PC, the firm did not announce much in terms of price, its specifications, or when it will be available to the general public.
Although HTC was a bit short on details at the ChinaJoy Expo where the device was revealed, there should be more information available over the coming months.
