HTC has pushed back its plans to launch fitness-focused wearables for the second time this year, and now says that its first devices won"t ship until 2016.
The company first showed off the "Grip" - developed in partnership with Under Armour - back in March, with a planned launch in Spring. But it later ditched plans to release the device, saying it had "decided to align Grip with the entire product portfolio for health and fitness launching later this year".
But HTC has now changed its plans again, delaying the launch that it promised "this year" until "early next year". In a statement to Phandroid, the company said:
As we continue to develop the Connected Fitness platform and elevate our product offerings, Under Armour and HTC have decided to launch a fully integrated digital ecosystem of products early next year. This global launch will provide the tools needed to help athletes of all levels track, manage and improve their health and fitness. Our teams have done a remarkable job bringing these products to life and we’re excited to share them with the public soon.
So instead of a single product, HTC is now committing to launching a "fully integrated digital ecosystem of products" at some point in early 2016. Whether that will include a new Grip-style wearable device remains to be seen - and of course, given HTC"s record so far, there"s always the chance that its plans will change yet again.
