HTC has reportedly killed its smartwatch plans

Wearables are the next big thing (literally, in some cases), and companies everywhere are scrambling to launch their wearables in a bid to grab a piece of the nascent market. Like many of its rivals, HTC has been working on its own such device for some time - but it seems that its plans have now changed.

HTC has reportedly abandoned development of its smartwatch, ditching its plans to launch the new device. The company has not made an official statement, but a source told Pocket-lint that "rising costs and a lack of wow factor" were likely what motivated the decision.

That suggests that the company may simply have realized that its product wasn"t good enough to compete with the various wearables unveiled by its rivals in recent days and weeks. With Apple expected to announce its new iWatch next week, launching a half-baked device just won"t cut it, especially with so many other compelling alternatives to choose from - at least, for those actually considering a smartwatch.
