HTC"s new One M9 flagship made an impressive debut earlier this month at Mobile World Congress, and the handset has become even more appealing with the announcement yesterday that US buyers will get a free replacement if they crack the screen or drop it in the toilet.
But with the imminent launch of the company"s new range-topper, one of its former flagships has now reached the end of the road. Mo Versi (Vice President for Product Management at HTC) has confirmed that the One M7 will get no further OS updates, which means that Android 5.0.2 Lollipop will be the last version to be distributed to the device.
Responding to an enquiry on Twitter about when the newer Android 5.1 release would be made available for the M7, Versi said that only the Google Play Edition version of the handset will get this update, and that it should be available by early April.
In a further tweet, Versi pointed out that HTC has provided two years" worth of OS updates since the One M7 was launched in early 2013. Given that many other manufacturers fail to even come close to this level of support - consider Sony, which has abandoned some of its devices after just 13 or 14 months - HTC can"t be criticized too harshly for finally drawing the line at two years.
