Huawei has announced that it and Three, earlier today, showcased 5G home broadband hardware at the 2018 Huawei Mobile Broadband Forum. The service - which can deliver download speeds of 2 Gbps - was experienced by forum attendees, and a video uploaded to Vimeo shows the speed of the network in real time.

Yang Chaobin, President of Huawei 5G Product Line, said:

“The 5G trials we carried out today demonstrate the opportunity this technology brings to the home broadband market. Huawei will continue to work with Three UK to bring customers more market-leading commercial applications of 5G”

Huawei and Three demonstrated the new technology following a pre-commercial network test that was carried out earlier this year by the two firms. Going forward, the two companies plan to conduct further tests in the UK, ready for a public release in 2019. The Three network will deliver the service in densely-populated urban areas and train stations initially, before it becomes a full commercial offering.

EE, another UK mobile provider, stated last week that it would be bringing 5G connectivity to 16 cities around the UK throughout 2019. Three and other players, such as O2, will be keen to deliver 5G to their own customers too, so that they don’t fall behind the competition.
