Hyatt Hotels Corporation has just announced in a news release to its customers that it identified the presence of malware on computers that "operate the payment processing systems for Hyatt-managed locations."
Details on the data breach are scarce, but Hyatt says it is working with "leading third-party cyber security experts" to investigate the breach and determine whether it has actively affected customer data, and if so, how many customers were affected and what sort of information was exposed.
The hotel chain says it has taken immediate steps to strengthen its security, and reassured customers that they can "feel confident using payment cards at Hyatt hotels worldwide."
Hyatt also urged customers to "review their payment card account statements closely," and to report any unauthorized charges immediately.
Hyatt, which operates 627 properties in 52 countries worldwide, currently maintains around 158,000 rooms for its widespread global customer base. The hotel chain reported gross earnings of $173 million in Q3 2015.
Hyatt says it will provide active updates on the potential data breach as it develops, accessible from this link.
