If you are a developer, Microsoft recommends you do not upgrade to Windows 10 build 10049

Microsoft has released a new build of Windows 10 to Insiders but if you are a developer, the company is saying that you should not update at this time. There are currently a few issues with Visual Studio 2015 that will prevent you from being able to use the software properly.

The two issues are noted below and as you can see, they create a barrier to developing Universal apps. The emphasis below was added by Microsoft:

  • The emulators will not boot and you won’t be able to deploy a Windows Universal app to the Mobile emulator.
  • The XAML designer in VS and Blend will crash when opened.
  • If you are a developer using these tools today to develop Windows Universal apps and need this functionality to work – we recommend switching to the Slow ring until we release a patch to fix these issues.

There is no timeline for when a patch will be released but seeing that this is known issue, expect it to be resolved in the near future.

There is another issue that will impact all users that they you should be aware of as well. After logging in, you may see a blue screen instead of your desktop, Microsoft has posted the fix below:

  • After logging in, you may see a blue screen instead of your desktop. To work around this issue, lock your PC (with the hardware button or by pressing the Windows Key + L) and try logging in again. You can also try Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

Finally, indexing of Outlook is not working correctly in this build which means your search results may be limited when searching.

As you can see from these release notes, this build is far from perfect, but that"s what you should expect with the Fast ring. So, if these issues are a deal-breaker for you, make sure to switch to the Slow ring so that when you do upgrade, you can expect a more stable build.
