Instagram has released a major update to its iOS and Android apps today, giving them features that will significantly increase photo customization.
In a post on the official Instagram blog, the company said the new "creative tools" will grant users "the ability to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, warmth and more." To do this, each setting has sliders to change its intensity; previously, photos could only be altered with blurring and a preset auto-contrast filter. Similarly, the intensity of filters can be adjusted with a sliding bar as well.
The update, version 6.0, will roll out to the iPhone and Android smartphones today.
Notably, Instagram doesn"t say when the features will make their way to the company"s official Windows Phone app, which is currently in beta. Since that app lags far behind its iPhone and Android counterparts, however, it"s highly likely that these features may not even reach Windows Phone users this year. The Instagram app still lacks the ability to upload video, a feature that came to the Android app in October. Similarly, Instagram Direct, a personal messaging feature that launched for the company"s Android and iPhone apps in December, has yet to make its way to Windows Phone.
Perhaps the best bet for the new features to arrive anytime soon on Windows Phone aren"t actually through the official Instagram app, but developer Rudy Huyn"s third-party 6tag app. That app received the Instagram Direct and video features within weeks of their release on the official iPhone and Android apps, and it even has some capabilities not present on those apps.
