Instagram user base goes up to 80 million

If you are a new user of Instagram, you are not alone. In April, when Facebook acquired the company that made the popular photo sharing and effects app for a cool $1 billion, it "only" had 30 million registered users. On May 1st, Instagram said that the number of registered users had increased to 50 million users, thanks mostly to the Android app version which launched just before Facebook bought the company.

Today, the official Instagram blog revealed yet another milestone for the app. The blog states, "We’re excited to announce that the Instagram community has grown to over 80 million registered users who have shared nearly 4 billion photos!."

Instagram launched the first iOS version in October 2010. News.com reports that the app went from zero to 1 million users by December 2010 and reached the 10 million user milestone in mid-2011.

It remains to be seen how Facebook will integrate Instagram"s software into its service. So far, the app has remained a stand alone free software product, unlike other mobile apps that Facebook has bought and then quickly retired. There"s also no word if there will be an Instagram app for Windows Phone or Blackberry devices or if it will come to the PC or Mac platforms.
