Intel CEO: PCs with Broadwell chips on sale for the holiday shopping season

Intel"s next major PC processor launch will finally happen in time for the 2014 holiday shopping season. That"s the word, anyway, from the company"s CEO, Brian Krzanich, after a few months of silence from Intel on the status of Broadwell.

The company"s last update on the processor was made in October, when it claimed that a delay in the manufacturing process for the new 14nm chip would push back its production until the first quarter of 2014. That time period has come and gone without Intel stating if mass manufacturing has in fact started.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich showed off a prototype Windows 8.1 Broadwell notebook in September.

However, in a chat with Reuters, Krzanich finally offered a little more information on the launch of Broadwell inside new PCs. He stated, "I can guarantee for holiday, and not at the last second of holiday. Back to school - that"s a tight one. Back to school you have to really have it on-shelf in July, August. That"s going to be tough."

While the back-to-school shopping season is a big one for new PC purchases, the holiday period is even bigger. The big question now is how many Windows PCs will have Broadwell processors inside by the end of 2014.

Last week, Intel launched new chipsets designed to offer better data storage speeds on PCs, along with a refresh of its current Haswell processors with a clock speed boost.
