Here we go again. Intel is countersuing Transmeta, alleging that the chip designer infringes on seven of its patents. Intel"s retaliation comes three months after Transmeta took Intel to court for allegedly violating 11 of its patents. The case is regarding energy efficiency when chips aren"t in use: Intel has problems with Transmeta"s Crusoe, Efficeon and Efficeon 2 brands while Transmeta is troubled with Intel"s Core 2 Duo, as well as processors dating as far back the P6 line. Transmeta is one of the first companies to investigate energy-efficient chips; some of its patents date back to 1991. With the amount of suing and countersuing going on these days, one wonders whether innovation is even possible without hiring a lawyer.
