Many smartphone buyers are eagerly awaiting the next wave of mobile flagships featuring a new generation of chips, such as Qualcomm"s latest Snapdragon 820, which will be crammed full of features, including Smart Protect anti-malware technology. But for those craving an even beefier mobile chip in a smartphone package, there"s good news from Intel today.
As Engadget reports, Intel General Manager Kirk Skagen said today that the company is bringing its Core M-series processors to phablets - i.e. large smartphones - and testing is already under way.
Perhaps the best-known device currently available with Core M chips is Apple"s 12-inch MacBook that launched earlier this year. The prospect of that kind of power being crammed into a smartphone is certainly an appealing one.
Intel said today that Core M is now a family of chips - Core M3, M5 and M7; a similar structure to its Core i-series of processors. These latest Skylake-generation Core M processors all get big improvements in performance and power management over the previous generation, and each is intended to cater for different types of devices.
So the Core M chips that make their way into smartphones are unlikely to be exactly the same as those that will be offered in new-gen notebooks like the next MacBook, but there"s still plenty to be excited about nonetheless.
Indeed, there"s a good chance we"ll see Windows 10 Mobile handsets eventually supporting these chips - and with the new Continuum feature built in to Microsoft"s OS, that opens up some very interesting possibilities indeed.
