Passwords are becoming increasingly insecure and numerous tech giants are looking into ways of improving security, from biometric sensors on modern day phones to facial recognition. With Windows 10 coming soon, Microsoft has an increased focus on security and jumped on the bandwagon with what it calls Windows Hello, incorporating support for fingerprint readers, 3D cameras with infrard sensors and other tools for biometric identification to allow for a more secure and convenient sign-in experience.
Intel"s RealSense 3D camera supports this functionality and the microprocessor manufacturer has published a website with a list of all the devices supporting Windows Hello facial recognition. These include various machines, ranging from laptop and two-in-ones to all-in-ones - such as the wildly innovative HP Sprout - and are available from a number of manufacturers, including Dell, Asus, Lenovo, Acer and HP. The company has also demoed the camera module on smartphones, which are also expected to receive Windows Hello compatibility. The devices listed are:
- Dell Inspiron 15 5548
- Acer Aspire V 17 Nitro
- Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 15
- Lenovo ThinkPad E550
- Asus N551JQ
- Asus ROG G771JM
- Asus X751LD
- HP Envy 15t Touch RealSense Laptop
- Lenovo B5030
- Dell Inspiron 23 7000
- HP Sprout
For those who do not own any of these devices, however, Intel also sells a $99.99 external RealSense camera, which is mostly aimed at developers but can also be used by consumers who want to try out the feature.
