In April, Intel"s chief product officer Dadi Pelmutter stated that some tablets that had the company"s upcoming Bay Trail-based Atom processor inside would cost as low as $200, if the tablets were using Google"s Android OS.
Today, as part of their Computex 2013 keynote, Intel is singing a different and even better tune on Bay Trail-based tablet prices. Computerworld.com reports that Hermann Eul, vice president and general manager of Intel"s Mobile and Communications Group, stated that in terms of the costs for Bay Trail tablets, "We believe we can push it well below the $199 price point."
This is good news for Intel, as it tries to compete with tablets that use processor designs from ARM, such as Qualcomm"s Snapdragon and NVIDIA"s Tegra chips. It"s also potentially good news for tablets that will run Windows 8.1. If Intel can cut the price down on Bay Trail processors, that means the upcoming 7 and 8 inch tablets that will run Microsoft"s next OS could be cheaper than the current limit of $299.
The first BayTrail-based tablets for Android and Windows 8.1 are expected to go on sale before the end of 2013. They are supposed to have twice the performance and much longer batter life compared to the current Clover Trail-based Atom processors.
