Intel, still smarting a bit from reports that its CEO said that Windows 8 still needed some improvements, today revealed more information about its processor that will be used inside a number of Windows 8-based tablet. The processor"s official name is the Atom Z2760, but it is better known by its code name Clover Trail.
Intel"s press release today said that it developed the dual-core based Clover Trail to work specifically for Windows 8. It claims that tablets with the chip inside will have " ... long battery life with more than 3 weeks of connected standby and more than 10 hours of local HD video playback." The chip is also supposed to support security features such as Secure Boot and Intel"s own firmware-based Platform Trust Technology (PTT).
The press release states:
Tablets and tablet convertibles powered by Intel Atom processors and running Windows 8 deliver a highly intuitive and responsive experience using touch, keyboard and mouse or a pen, while providing capabilities such as Intel Burst Technology, Intel Hyper-threading Technology. Utilizing the multitasking capability of Intel architecture, people will experience incredibly fast response, allowing them to swiftly load and switch among their favorite applications.
Windows 8-based tablets that will use Clover Trail can be designed to be as thin as 8.5mm and as light as 1.5 pounds, according to Intel. Tablets from HP, Dell, Asus, Acer, Lenovo, ZTE and others will have the Atom Z2760 processor inside when they launch in late October.
