As expected, Apple released its newest major software updates for iOS, watchOS, and tvOS today. macOS Mojave is still in beta, but there should be a GM seed available soon.
Unsurprisingly, iOS 12 is the most feature-packed of the group. But one of the biggest changes isn"t front-facing at all; it"s about under-the-hood changes to improve performance on older devices. In fact, the update is available for all devices that iOS 11 worked on, going all the way back to the iPhone 5s.
There are quire a few new Animoji features, if you"re using the newest of devices (anything in the X family). Memoji allows you to create Animoji based on yourself, and Animojis can now mimic your facial expressions as well. You can even put them on top of your face during a FaceTime call, or in Messages.
Screen Time is another big one. This feature provides you with reports on how much time you"re spending on your device, and how you"re using that time. You can set App Limits for yourself, and you can set a bedtime so you won"t get notifications while you"re sleeping. There"s also grouped notifications to reduce clutter on your lock screen.
Siri Shortcuts is a new app that"s available today. This allows you to create a sequence of events with a Siri command. There are also redesigned apps like Books, News, Stocks, amd Voice Memos.
And then there"s watchOS 5, which you can grab through the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Along with some exercise features, such as the ability for it to detect when you start and stop working out, there"s also (finally) a Podcasts app. On top of that, there"s a new Walkie-Talkie app that will allow you to use your Apple Watch just like you used to use your old Nextel phone.
Finally, tvOS 12 is pretty light on new features, although it does bring support for Dolby Atmos. It lso adds new Aerial screen savers that were filmed from the International Space Station.
