Thanksgiving has come a couple of days early for iDevice power users after the infamous Dev-Team released an updated version of their redsn0w utility for iOS 4.2.1.
Engadget spotted the updated release, which came less than 24 hours after Apple released their latest iOS update, and allows iPad, iPod touch and iPhone users to jailbreak their devices. Unfortunately for owners of the iPhone 4, iPad, ""new"" bootrom iPhone 3GS and newer iPod touch models, the 4.2.1 jailbreak is ""tethered"", meaning the user will need to reconnect their device via cable to a PC or Mac everytime their device is rebooted or loses power. The Dev-Team have also advised users to ensure they keep their SHSH blobs for all devices as they may prove necessary for a future, ""untethered"" jailbreak.
Users with an iPhone 3G, iPhone3GS with ""old"" bootrom, and ""non-MC"" series iPod touch 2nd generation have access to an ""untethered"" iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.
Those unsure of their iPhone 3GS bootrom version can follow a guide from the Redmond Pie blog. Checking whether you have an ""MC"" series iPod touch is as simple as going to the iPod"s Settings menu, then General, then About. The letters ""MC"" at the start of the Model field denote an ""MC"" series device.
For those looking to unlock their iDevices, the Dev-Team reported that the situation looks ""very promising"" and gave a tentative release date of this week for an iPhone 3G and 3GS unlock tool. iPhone 4 users should expect a somewhat longer wait, with ""no further concrete info"" available from the Dev-Team. As always, those looking to keep an existing unlock should not update their iOS version until a new unlock tool is made available.
