iPhone 5 can't do simultaneous voice and data on Verizon, Sprint

Apple"s new iPhone 5 will not be able to simultaneously transfer voice and data on all networks, reports The Verge. Specifically, Verizon and Sprint will not support the feature on their networks, even if the iPhone 5 is connected to LTE.

The absence of this feature is strange in light of the fact that all the other LTE phones available from Verizon do support simultaneous voice and data when connected to LTE.

A Verizon spokesperson made this statement to The Verge on the issue: "The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while letting customers access the Internet over the WiFi."

Because Verizon and Sprint will have the same version of the iPhone 5, according to Apple, simultaneous voice and data will also be unsupported on Sprint"s network. A representative from Sprint later confirmed this fact with The Verge.

AT&T did confirm that its version of the iPhone 5 will support the feature on both HSPA+ or LTE. However, AT&T"s iPhone 5 will not be able to utilize full LTE speeds while on a phone call.
