Is an iPod Nano hardware refresh imminent?

It’s shaping up to be a very nice September for Apple. Although unconfirmed, the new iPhone is expected to be revealed along with the debut of the iPad Mini; all at Apple’s iPhone event on September 12th.

Major retailers, including Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy, are seemingly running low on stock (or in some cases out of stock completely) of the current Nano, prompting rumours that the device will get a refresh, taking it to its 7th generation.

There’s two ways to look at this. Firstly, Apple will tell retailers to hold off on buying an existing device if a newer one is about to be released. Alternatively, there could be a problem in the production line, causing a stock shortage. Both arguments are plausible, but with the upcoming iPhone event, it would be the ideal place for any new or refreshed hardware to be showcased.

The current Nano was released on the 1st of September 2010 and comes in 8GB and 16GB varieties. A refresh may well add more storage, a camera, or video playback, all of which were absent from the current range of devices. Could a redesign be on the table, or an update to the hardware and software? Only Apple can say for definite.

So mark September 12th in your calendars, if you haven’t already. It may be shaping up to be the day of the iPhone, and possibly the iPad Mini, but just maybe the iPod Nano can spring a surprise of its own.
