Humanoid robot-maker UBTECH, is releasing a new miniature robot called the First Order Stormtrooper. As the name suggests, this is a robot modeled on the infamous foot soldiers of the Star Wars franchise.
Users can command the robot to patrol around their homes in its sentry mode, and it will notify you if there are any intruders. The product uses IR to navigate its way around, so it shouldn"t bump into any objects, but it can also memorize up to three faces, which is two more than the iPhone X, and once recognized, the robot can issue a personalized response to each corresponding person; so some people might benefit from an ego boost by being called supreme leader first thing on a Monday.
The First Order Stormtrooper Robot also has an app which is the interface for its AR features, where users can enter either a first or third person perspective, issue further voice commands, and order the robot to launch attacks on the Resistance. No personal data is stored on the app or in the robot, Wi-Fi is used to connect the app with the Stormtrooper, and the company says that all transmission are 128-bit AES encrypted. So there shouldn"t be too many concerns over this soldier getting hacked, mutinying, and coming after you with a screwdriver.
The product will retail for $299.99 and will initially only be available for shipping to the USA. This isn"t the first toy-like product to incorporate a VR or AR feature, and with the continuing development of AR and VR it is also unlikely that this will be the last.
