Five months ago, Google announced the first details of Android O, the next major version of its operating system. Since then, it"s released four Developer Previews, while speculation has run rampant over the identity of the sweet, delicious treat after which the new update will be named.
On Friday, as it began its final countdown to today"s big announcement, it appeared that the company had accidentally confirmed the name, as a video that it published on Google+ included "Android Oreo" in its filename. Google later changed it to "Octopus", referencing an Easter egg that it had dropped into its last Developer Preview.
But today, the speculation has ended, as Google officially confirmed that the name of its new OS is indeed Android 8.0 Oreo.
Google is promoting Android 8.0 as the "open wonder", with a superhero theme to go along with it. "Smarter, faster, more powerful and sweeter than ever," it says, "the world"s favorite cookie is your new favorite Android release."
This is only the second time that Google has used the name of an existing sweet product, following the release of Android 4.4 KitKat in 2013. While many were expecting Google to make some sort of additional announcement today - perhaps including details of availability - the short event ended as soon as the big reveal was made.
For now, you can watch Google"s promotional animation for Oreo in the video below:
