It's official: Microsoft announces the Windows 10 Creators Update, coming 'early 2017'

The latest version of Windows 10 is the Anniversary Update, which Microsoft released in August. Today, at an event in New York City, the company announced details of its next big update.

The surprise was spoiled earlier today when a reference was spotted on the Windows Store to the "Windows 10 Creators Update".

Microsoft confirmed the name at its event, and announced that it will be coming in "early 2017" as a free update for all Windows 10 users. A couple of weeks ago, it emerged that Microsoft was referring internally to the new update as "Version 1703", indicating that the company is aiming to release it in March 2017.

Microsoft said that the Creators Update will focus on three key areas:

  • Augmented and virtual reality, including "3D for everyone"
  • Better gaming, including 4K and in-game broadcasting
  • Improving the experience of connecting to everyone that matters most - family, friends, fellow gamers, or colleagues

Early builds of the Creators Update are already in the hands of Windows Insiders, under the Redstone 2 development codename.
