John Romero, the co-creator of seminal PC shooters such as Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake, says he is "definitely going to be making another shooter and it will be on PC first," reports Eurogamer.
Details on his new PC shooter are sparse, and so far the game seems to be little more than ideas in Romero"s creative mind. He did share a few of those ideas with Eurogamer, such as that the game will be "MMO-ish" and will include new twists on genre tropes. Romero commented that he is not a fan of cover systems or player characters "being a bullet sponge," and postulated that console controllers might have forced developers to design games with these attributes out of necessity.
The last time Romero released a shooter game was in 2003, with the N-Gage version of Red Faction.
Romero is currently CEO of Loot Drop, Inc., a social game studio that was founded in November, 2010 by Romero, Brenda Brathwaite and Robert Sirotek, and is currently home to Tom Hall, an id Software veteran who worked on games such as Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom.
Loot Drop"s only confirmed project so far is Ghost Recon Commander, which is a social game spin-off based on Ubisoft"s tactical shooter series. Romero did not confirm to Eurogamer whether his new PC shooter would be produced by Loot Drop, or even when work on it would begin.
"I wouldn"t want to give out any specifics until I"m close to shipping it," Romero said in regard to specific details of the PC shooter. "I"ve learned my lesson about talking too soon about specific game features and release dates."
After games like Daikatana, let"s hope he has.
