If you"ve seen the screen above, chances are either you or someone you know has been a victim of ransomware. Luckily, Kaspersky Lab, makers of Kaspersky security software, has found a potential solution.
If you have never seen the screen above, consider yourself lucky. "CoinVault" is similar to "CryptoLocker" in that it takes your information and holds it "hostage" by encrypting the data. The application demands payment in order for the files to be decrypted and the ransom increases the longer you take to comply. Naturally, most would be skeptical of this type of ploy, but CoinVault is unique in that it will allow you to decrypt one file for free.
Fortunately, Kaspersky Lab in conjunction with the Netherlands police has found a solution by way of decryption keys that were recently obtained. Using the recovered decryption keys, Kaspersky has built a tool that can decrypt the hostage data. This will only work for data that has been encrypted using the recovered keys.
While this is far from a complete solution, it is one step closer and will no doubt become a effective tool when and if the remaining keys are discovered. The Kaspersky "Ransomware Decryptor" is available in the source link below.
