Kerbal Space Program 2 announced, adds multiplayer, interstellar travel, and more

During the main gamescom live show today, a sequel to Kerbal Space Program was unveiled in a surprise announcement. See the announcement trailer of Kerbal Space Program 2 above, and although it doesn"t feature any gameplay, it does capture the spirit of the little space-faring aliens.

The game is being developed by Star Theory with Private Division handling the publishing duties. The studio behind the original game, Squad, is also lending support for the new developer.

Star Theory says that while it is keeping the foundations of the original, it is developing the sequel from the ground up to "meet the demands of modern and next-generation space exploration." This means there"s multiplayer support for the first time, colonies to construct, and interstellar travel, all the while keeping modding support in.

Here"s how the studio described the title:

Build a space program, construct powerful spacecraft, design resource-gathering colonies, and much more to uncover the secrets of the galaxy. A plethora of exciting new features will captivate veteran and returning players, as well as usher in a whole new wave of Kerbonauts to the ingenious and comedic world that has entertained millions of players.

A firm release date isn"t attached to Kerbal Space Program 2 yet, but it is planned to launch sometime in 2020 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
