With the official launch of Amazon"s Kindle Fire tablet now less than a week away, the company has revealed that owners of the product will be able to access several thousand Android-based applications. That includes Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, games from EA and other publishers, however it appears that the marketplace is the Android marketplace. The Kindle Fire officially goes on sale on November 15.
While the seven inch tablet uses a version of Google"s Android as its operating system, Amazon has put its own user interface over the Android OS. Even with that extra layer it looks like there will be a lot of Android apps that will run on the Kindle Fire. In addition, Amazon plans to offer a paid app for free every day for Kindle Fire owners. If you also own another Android device, any app bought or downloaded for the Kindle Fire will also be able to be used for those devices as well.
Of course, Amazon will offer its own apps for the tablet including the Kindle app for downloading and/or purchasing eBooks, Amazon Cloud for streaming music and Amazon Video for streaming music and TV shows. That latter service will require an annual $79 fee to Amazon Prime.
With the launch of the $199 Kindle Fire on November 15, followed by the Barnes and Noble rival the Nook Tablet for $249 on November 17, we expect that there will be lots of these low priced tablets sold for the busy holiday shopping season.
