The popular free-to-play action-RTS game League of Legends from developer Riot Games is the latest victim of a hacker attack. According to a post on the European version of the League of Legends website, "Hackers gained access to certain personal player data contained in certain EU West and EU Nordic & East databases."
The information that was lifted from the database included a player"s " ... email address, encrypted account password, summoner name, date of birth, and – for a small number of players – first and last name and encrypted security question and answer." Riot Games claims that no financial information was taken from the database.
Riot Games is urging League of Legends players to immediately change their passwords. The company said it has now fixed the issue that caused the security breach and is now talking with " ... experts and are working with the relevant authorities to more thoroughly understand causes, culprits, and preventative measures to make future breaches less likely."
Riot Games" co-founder Marc Merrill states that he and the company"s other co-founder Brandon Beck" ... want to sincerely and personally apologize to you for this situation. We take your privacy and security seriously, and we"re working diligently to improve it for the better."
