Leak offers glimpse of Windows Continuum-style 'DeX' desktop mode for Samsung Galaxy S8

The folks at Android Police have been able to get their hands on a system dump from a Tab 3 that shows off elements from the upcoming Galaxy S8. While it is currently unknown why these images are present on a tablet system dump, it appears to show the phone"s onscreen navigation icons, which we reported on earlier, but more importantly, it also includes an image of the desktop-like feature dubbed DeX.

DeX has long been rumored and if this information is accurate, it would further confirm the notion of such a feature arriving with the new handset.

From what has been reported so far, DeX sounds conceptually similar to the PC-like Continuum mode in Microsoft"s Windows 10 Mobile operating system. Some high-end Windows phones can be used with a mouse and keyboard when connected to a secondary display, complete with a desktop-style user interface. Earlier reports suggested that much the same functionality would be offered on the Galaxy S8, enabled through a dedicated desktop dock, albeit only with support for Android apps.

Although Mobile World Congress starts in less than a week, Samsung"s next handset, the Galaxy S8, has been confirmed not be present at the event. While there could be a teaser of the handset, it is expected that the firm will instead launch two tablets, the Galaxy Tab S3 and a Galaxy TabPro S2. The Galaxy S8 is rumored to make its debut in the next couple months at a standalone event that will be held in New York.
