Earlier this week, we reported that specs had been leaked for one of RIM’s new L-Series BlackBerry 10 handsets, codename ‘London’. The leak revealed a solid set of specs for the device, although only time will tell whether its feature list will still stand out in the smartphone market by the time the first BB10 devices finally go on sale, some 4-6 months from now.
Perhaps it’s just as well then that a further leak suggests that RIM is working on another device, with an even more impressive set of specs. While the trio of L-Series devices (London, Lisbon and Laguna) is expected to sit towards the upper echelons of RIM’s new range, RapidBerry.com has revealed what is claimed to be the first of a superlative "A-Series" of handsets.
Very little has so far previously been revealed about the A-Series, beyond a few mentions on community and fan sites. The first such device, codename ‘Aristo’, looks set to be a mighty new flagship for RIM’s new BB10 range, including a quad-core processor, and the largest display and thinnest body ever to feature on a BlackBerry handset.
The spec sheet above isn’t terribly clear, so here’s a quick précis of the handset"s key features:
- Dimensions: 136 x 68 x 8.85mm
- Quad-band GSM / WCDMA / 4G LTE support (separate variants for North America and Europe/Asia-Pacific)
- Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 Krait Quad-Core 1.5GHz + MDM9x15 baseband LTE modem
- 4.65” OLED, 1280x720px resolution
- 8MP rear cam with flash, 1080p at 30fps | 2MP front cam, 720p
- 2GB RAM | 16GB on-board storage; microSD slot
- 802.11 a/b/g/n 2.4GHz/5GHz wi-fi
- NFC | A-GPS | microUSB | microHDMI-out | DLNA | Bluetooth 4.0
- 2800mAh sealed battery
To give you a rough idea of how this handset is set to shape up, its dimensions and display size are more or less identical to that of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus; the Qualcomm APQ8064 and MDM9x15 chipset are identical to those confirmed for LG’s new Optimus G handset. Aristo’s 2800mAh battery far exceeds that of both the Nexus and the Optimus, which both feature 2100mAh affairs.
Now, as with all unverified leaks, this may all ultimately be exposed as a crock of you-know-what – so the usual pinch of salt is recommended. If these specs turn out to be accurate though, BlackBerry fans could well have a new reason to rejoice. Whether those outside of the BlackBerry community will be so excited about Aristo and its siblings, however, remains to be seen.
