In April last year, Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop 4 in two sizes and a variety of colors. Though one of the gripes of many, and especially AMD fans was the fact that the Ryzen variants were using previous-generation chips in the form of Ryzen 4000 (codenamed "Renoir") instead of the latest Ryzen 5000 (Cezzane) processors.
However, that could be changing this time around as an alleged leaked spec document of the next-gen Surface Laptop 5 shows that the device will not only feature the latest Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake chips, but also the newest AMD Ryzen 6000 Rembrandt mobile APUs that were recently announced at the CES 2022 event.
The leak comes from WindowsPrime and the entire purported spec sheet of the Surface Laptop 5 is given in the image below:
As is the tradition, it looks like Microsoft will be using custom Ryzen Rembrandt variants in the form of the 8C/16T Ryzen 7 6980U and the 6C/12T Ryzen 5 6680U.
This is a good thing for the CPU side as it will now be Zen 3+ up from Zen 2 on the Surface Laptop 4. But the upgrade to the GPU side should be even bigger as RDNA 2 will finally replace Vega integrated graphics. Ryzen 6000 also packs AV1 decode support as well as LPDDR5 support though it seems like Surface Laptop 5 will only feature LPDDR4X, at least according to this leaked document.
When it comes to the Intel SKUs, Surface Laptop 5 is allegedly getting the 14C/20T Core i7-1280P and the 12C/16T i5-1240P.
