HTC began rolling out the Android 5.0 update to its One M8 flagship this week, starting with Developer and Unlocked editions of the handset. The company has previously committed to releasing the update for both the One M8 and its M7 predecessor before February 2, but it has so far remained tight-lipped on its plans for other devices in its range.
However, HTCViet.vn has published some of the details that HTC handset owners have been waiting for, in the form of what is said to be an internal company slide showing its Lollipop rollout plans.
Beyond the One M8 and M7, the next wave of devices to get the update includes the One E8, Desire EYE, One M8 EYE and Butterfly 2. The rollout for these devices will reportedly begin in February.
Seven more handsets will get the update in March, including the One M8 Mini, Desire 816 and One MAX. A further group of five devices will be bumped up to Android 5.0 in either March or April.
This information appears credible, but it is by no means certain - and even if it is accurate, such plans are, of course, always subject to delay for any number of reasons. It"s also worth noting that even when Lollipop does begin rolling out for any particular handset, there is still the long and frustrating process of carrier approval to look forward to, so the update may take a while to actually land on your device.
One further question mark hangs over the issue of whether or not HTC intends to update any other devices in its range to Android 5.0 beyond those listed here, or if this will be the extent of its plans. Alas, this uncertainty will likely remain until HTC officially announces more details about its Lollipop rollout in the coming weeks.
