Leaked photo suggests this year's smallest iPhone could be called iPhone 12 mini

Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhone lineup at some point in October, having notably skipped out on an announcement at last week"s special event. For the past few months, most of the specs of the upcoming devices have been leaked, including display sizes of 5.4 inches for the iPhone 12, 6.1 inches for the iPhone 12 Max and iPhone 12 Pro, and 6.7 inches for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

As it turns out, though, these names may have been off, as a new pictures shared by Twitter user DuanRui (spotted by MacRumors) suggests that the smallest iPhone 12 model may actually end up being called iPhone 12 mini. The picture depicts sticker labels for silicone cases for each of the new iPhones, and it further suggests that the 6.1-inch models will be the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, which use the same case design, while the 6.7-inch model will be the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The user who shared the picture has proven reliable in the past. In August, they shared a picture of a manual for the new iPad Air, which included references to an all-screen design and Touch ID being built into the power button. Both of these things turned out to be true when Apple announced the device last week. There have also been other leaks pointing to the iPhone 12 mini name from other sources.

Apple is no stranger to using the "mini" name for its products, with the iPad and Mac families having both used the name somewhat recently, but it would be the first time the company uses it for the iPhone. However, it"s also the first time Apple is making an all-new iPhone with a screen that small since the iPhone X was introduced in 2017, so it makes some sense for it to be this way. Of course, we"ll need to wait for Apple to formally announce the device to know for sure.
