Leaked specs detail Sony's iPad mini rival, the Z3 Tablet Compact

Sony is expected to launch a new addition to its tablet range in a couple of weeks, taking the fight to Apple"s iPad mini, with an 8-inch device, featuring some pretty solid specs. In fact, most of those specs have apparently been revealed rather sooner than Sony would have liked, ahead of its official unveiling of the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact at next month"s IFA trade show in Berlin.

The new tablet is expected to be water-resistant, like the Xperia Z2 Tablet pictured

A "very trusted source who has a very good history with leaks related to Sony devices" shared details of the upcoming mini-tablet with Android Origin. Key specs quoted by the tipster include:

  • MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16GB onboard storage
  • 8-inch Full HD (1920x1080px) IPS LCD
  • 8MP Exmor RS rear camera
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • NFC
  • Bluetooth 4.0 LE
  • Battery in the 4500-5000mAh range
  • Water- and dust-resistant

Despite highlighting the strong previous record of the tipster, the site does nonetheless suggest that these details be taken with a pinch of salt - a prudent move with any unverified information, of course.

However, assuming the info here is correct, it sounds like Sony has quite a decent device in store - but the price of the new tablet will be crucial in establishing its success or failure in the market. Pricing details remain a mystery, for now, but at least there"s not long to wait until we find out.

Sony is expected to launch its new Xperia Z3 smartphone soon too, despite its predecessor - the Z2 - having only been on sale for a few months, and only launching in the US a few weeks ago.
