At the Solidworks World 2017 event today, Lenovo unveiled a refreshed line of ThinkPad P-series mobile workstations, the P51, P51s, and P71. The laptops offer just about everything you could ask for in terms of performance.
The ThinkPad P51 comes in a number of configurations, which can use an Intel Xeon E3-v6 processor, or a seventh-generation Core chip. Graphics are up to an Nvidia Quadro M2200M, and you can get it with up to 64GB DDR4.
It comes with up to a 4K display, and while it"s powerful, it weighs 5.6 pounds. You"ll also get your choice of operating system, between Windows 10 Home, Pro, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Ubuntu Linux.
Lenovo"s ThinkPad P71 offers the same chip, OS, and RAM options as the P51, but it"s larger, with a 17-inch display. The graphics are more powerful as well, with up to Nvidia Quadro P5000M. It"s heavy though, coming in at 7.6 pounds.
The P71 is also VR-ready, with Lenovo promising that it has "the ability to bring a new visual perspective and immersive experience to our customers’ workflow."
The ThinkPad P51s is meant to be the more portable option of the three, coming in at 4.3 pounds. It comes with a seventh-generation Intel Core-series processor, but there"s no Xeon option. Graphics are an Nvidia Quadro M520M, and it only comes with up to 32GB RAM.
Your choice in operating system will be either Windows 7 Professional or 10 Pro. This is interesting because according to Microsoft, OEMs haven"t been able to purchase a license for Windows 7 since October. It also comes with a trial for Office 2013.
All of the new mobile workstations are MIL-SPEC tested, so they can "endure the rigors of day-to-day use in the field".
The Lenovo ThinkPad P51s will be the least expensive of the lot, starting at $1,049, and will be available in March. The P51 and P71 will be released the following month, starting at $1,399 and $1,849, respectively.
