Lenovo Legion Y740 unboxing and first impressions: RTX graphics on a laptop

A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed the HP OMEN Obelisk, the first PC I"ve used with Nvidia"s new RTX graphics cards, and it was literally game-changing. But at CES this year, Nvidia announced the mobile versions of RTX, so naturally, I"m excited to see it in a laptop, and that"s where the Lenovo Legion Y740 comes in.

The Legion Y740 is nearly identical to the Y730, which I reviewed just over two months ago. Indeed, the Y730 is not an old PC; it only was announced in June and didn"t ship until September. At the time, Lenovo said it would offer it with Nvidia"s next-gen graphics when they became available, but it seems that the firm decided to give it a new name instead.

So the big difference with the Y740 really is the GeForce RTX graphics, and the 15-inch model that Lenovo sent me has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070. Lenovo also sent me the 17-inch model with an RTX 2080, so I"ll be doing a lot of testing with this. Other than that, it"s pretty much the same as before, with an Intel Core i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, most of the ports on the back with a couple on the sides, and so on.
