Lenovo's Moto Z will receive Nougat update next month, with Play version following in March

Back in November, Motorola updated the Verizon Wireless variant of its Moto Z, the Moto Z Force, to Android Nougat. While the Lenovo-owned company promised to deliver the update to unlocked models, as well as the G4, by the end of 2016, it so far hasn"t delivered.

According to a new report from Android Central, the unlocked Moto Z will be upgraded to Nougat next month in February. Also, both the unlocked and Verizon Wireless variants of the Moto Z Play should receive the update within the same timeframe of each other, which will be in March.

This is not a common situation. Normally, unlocked models receive updates before their carrier-locked sister handsets, as open market devices don"t require any kind of carrier approval to push out an update. This is a bit different though, as the Z Force was released about two months before the Moto Z, so they"re on different software paths.

As of the latest usage report, Nougat is running on just 0.7% of Android devices, and just 0.2% are running the latest version, 7.1.1. According to the report, the Moto Z handsets will receive 7.0, which will add onto the other 0.5%.
