LG is making the jump into the cloud-based data storage business, following the launch of Google Drive and the revamp of Microsoft"s SkyDrive service last week. Today, LG revealed its plans for LG Cloud, which will offer 5 GB of free cloud storage space.
LG Cloud, which is launching in a beta state, has downloadable clients for Windows XP and Windows 7 PCs, along with Android devices. Owners of LG"s Smart TVs can also download an LG Cloud app. LG claims their new cloud service will be able to sync up photos and video from an Android smartphone or tablet to an LG TV or a PC. The PC client also allows videos that are edited on a PC to be played immediately on an Android smartphone.
LG also claims that any videos or pictures taken on an LG 3D smartphone can be uploaded to LG Cloud and then played in 3D on a compatible LG Smart TV.
The company also went into detail on its video conversion process. It states:
The difference is in LG"s Real-time Streaming Transcoding technology. The conversion happens on the server in realtime, not on the device. There is no need to worry about installing codecs or converters, everything happens seamlessly and in the background with no involvement from the user. No other cloud service can make this same claim.
LG plans to offer additional storage space on LG Cloud for a fee but no details were announced. News.com reports that anyone who has bought an LG Smart TV or LG smartphone will get 50 GB of free storage on the service for six months.
