LG has announced the “world’s first” 8K OLED TV at IFA 2018. The huge 88-inch TV has a resolution of 7680x4320 and features over 33 million self-emitting pixels to ensure viewers get the best contrast ratio and true blacks to provide some of the best visuals.
Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company, said:
“LG’s first 8K OLED TV is the pinnacle of technological achievement and the next evolutionary step in display technology. 4K OLED played a major role in reshaping TV industry and LG is confident that 8K OLED will do the same.”
According to LG, OLED shipments in 2018 are expected to double, and reach over nine million units by 2022. It said it will be increasing the number of OLED models in its premium TV portfolio. LG said that its new product is still in a market that’s in its infancy but is expected to grow by five million units by 2022 and it said that it hopes to lead that market with products like the 88-inch 8K LG OLED TV.
Sadly, LG didn’t give any other specifications about the TV nor did it give a price or release date. With it being the first 8K OLED on the market, it’ll likely have a hefty price tag attached. Still, it’s interesting to see that LG believes such massive TVs will be so popular in 2022.
