Last week, LG announced that its 2018 lineup of OLED and Super UHD TVs will include its ThinQ AI platform, combining Google Assistant and deep learning to provide voice controls for the device. Naturally, this also adds the other features that you"d expect from Google"s virtual assistant, such as smart home control and such.
The firm unveiled the entire lineup earlier this week at CES, but there was one key feature that wasn"t announced. All of the ThinQ AI TVs will include support for Amazon"s Alexa voice assistant.
That"s right; if you speak to your voice remote, you"ll be talking to Google, but you can also control the TV with your Amazon Echo. You know, just in case you want to use both. Users can say things like, "Alexa, turn down the volume on the living room TV", or "Alexa, change the channel to CNN on my kitchen TV".
"LG has long been committed to developing TVs that combine innovative technologies with the widest range of convenient, user-friendly interfaces and adding Amazon Alexa is consistent with this strategy," said Tim Alessi, Senior Director, Product Marketing for home entertainment at LG Electronics USA. "LG’s 2018 webOS-enabled AI TVs give customers the added capabilities of Alexa on their TVs without sacrificing any of the features of LG ThinQ, which can still be accessed with LG Magic Remote."
The feature will be available when the new TVs launch, but it will only be offered in English and in the United States, at least at launch.
