LG's new thin and light Windows 10 notebooks promise up to 24 hours of battery life

LG has unveiled a new family of thin and light Windows 10 notebooks, following the launch of its Gram Ultra laptop in 2015. Along with a range of premium specs, the new devices were announced with the promise of spectacular battery life.

The new LG Gram family is available in standard and "ultra-light" configurations, each of which is offered in three screen sizes: 13, 14, and 15.6 inches. All of the new models feature Intel"s latest 7th-generation (Kaby Lake) Core processors, but the new Core i7 is only available on the 15.6-inch standard model.

Various configurations of both the standard and ultra-light models are available. On the standard models, you can get up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB storage, but even on the range-topping 15.6-inch variant, the device only weighs 1.09kg.

The lightest of the new Gram notebooks is the 13-inch ultra-light model, which weighs just 830g, despite coming with a 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM and Intel Core i3 processor. The ultra-light variants also save weight by doing away with the keyboard backlighting that is available on the standard models.

Regardless of display size or model, all of the Gram laptops have slim bezels and IPS LCDs with Full HD (1920x1080px) resolution. The absence of higher-resolution displays helps to improve battery life, which is a major selling point for the devices.

The standard Gram models have a generous 60Wh battery, which LG says can deliver up to 24 hours of usage on the 13.3-inch versions, 23 hours on the 14-inch, and 22 hours on the 15.6-inch model. The ultra-light models have a much smaller 34Wh battery, so you can obviously expect a lot less usage from those before you need to find a power socket.

According to the press release from LG Korea, all Gram models come with a USB 3.0 port, a USB Type-C port and a HDMI port, and include support for 802.11ac WiFi. The Windows Blog states that "pricing and availability will be announced at a later date", but LG does offer guide pricing for the devices in its home market of Korea.

Prices will start in Korea at 1,360,000 KRW (roughly $1,140 USD) for the entry-level 13.3-inch ultra-light model, rising to 2,450,000 KRW ($2,050 USD) for the range-topping 15.6-inch model with the full-size 60W battery. Remember that pricing in international markets is always set locally, and may differ considerably from direct currency conversions.
